Our story begins almost a century ago, when the very young Tonino Spapperi and his wife, Rosa, opened the doors of their butcher shop for the first time. A beautiful photograph from the early 1930s shows them with their little daughter Maddalena, an employee, and a couple of friends standing in front of the entrance—still the same one today—looking onto the old “Piazza delle Donne,” later renamed Piazza Venanzio Gabriotti but, for the people of Città di Castello, always the “Piazza de sotto.”
The modest shop weathered the hardships of the war. In the 1950s, Rosa’s young nephew, Bruno Giulietti, began a long apprenticeship: over time he developed excellent butchering skills and, upon Tonino’s untimely passing, took the helm of the shop with great mastery. Thanks to his passionate work and the irreplaceable support of his wife, Anna Buoncompagni, the business grew, keeping pace with the prosperity that finally reached our town: meat became an everyday food, accessible to all.
In the mid-1970s, at just seventeen, Luigi Giulietti took his first steps by selling poultry in a corner of the abattoir, while learning the craft from his uncle—his great mentor. When Bruno decided to step down, Luigi took up the torch. He represents the third generation of a family in which the shop has passed, more than once, from uncle to nephew. After finishing his studies, Luigi’s brother Giovanni also joined the business.
Since then, the Giulietti brothers have carried the business forward together through profound changes in society. What has never changed is their passion for the trade: with the help of skilled, motivated collaborators, they open the doors each morning to a shop that remains a living part of the history and daily life of Città di Castello
